psu was kind enough to send me his old Bogen 3205, and I picked up a ballhead & quick-release yesterday. (The Bogen Midi RC2.) The relative sturdiness between this setup and the entry-level plastic tripod I had (and lost) is impressive; even with a big ole' telephoto lens sticking out, the ball head has no tendency to slide downward over time. And the quick release base that attaches to the camera has a clever little screw design so that I can place the panel where I want it, and use a separate little handle to screw in the screw.
So naturally I tried to take a picture of the moon. I still don't really have a sufficient amount of zoom for decent resolution, but here's a heavily cropped image:
