Paul Graham's essay comparing hackers and painters does the best job yet of describing what it is I love about what I do. Wild flights of fancy (and an obsession with beauty) followed by weeks of painstaking detail work: sounds like art to me. When I speak about my work, friends of mine who write have commented (with some surprise) on the parallels.
Predictably, Slashdot doesn't get it. The temptation is to focus on technical competence, and to hold those who don't possess it in contempt. But the reality is that any of act of creation is a form of storytelling, and in the end the only people who matter are the people you are trying to tell that story to. 9:27:10 AM ()
