I definitely agree with Brent Simmon's assessment that RSS browsing of web sites is the way to go. Of course, he's biased, as he's responsible for the increasingly impressive NetNewsWire Lite.
He points out that it's possible to embed a LINK attribute in your weblog's source to indicate the location of the RSS feed, and encourages people to do so -- the latest version of NNWL can use this for automatic discovery of the RSS feed. Add it like so:
