Some initial impressions:
The initial load time (time between pressing "new game" and having the actual intro movie start) seemed frustratingly slow. In general, level loading is slow (but would probably be faster if I didn't have all of the texture options and resolution turned all -- well most -- of the way up). However, loading within a level (e.g., reloading your game after you die) is very fast, so it's really not a big deal.
The opening sequence follows the pattern perfectly: there's scrolling text, then we pan down to a planet, and then a spaceship flys in. Whoosh! I LOVE IT!
I have the distinct recollection that Jan Orrs gets whacked in Jedi Knight I. Am I crazy? Regardless, she's back and ready for action in JK2 (and all continuity problems aside, she's a welcome addition).
JK1 was perhaps the only fully 3D game that attempted to really give you a 3D map. JK2 does NOT attempt this. Shrug. No biggie.
The visuals are, as you'd expect from a Quake 3 game, "stunning". And very fast & fluid. There's a cute little dissolve effect that transitions from the "level complete" screen right into the next level. Also, as you'd expect, the Star Wars universe feel is just right. Some have complained that the blaster shots seem slow -- to them, I say feh.
It took me about 2 hours to get through the first two levels (which comprise one logical area). This feels about right to me in terms of pacing. The puzzles weren't super complicated -- you're still essentially getting keys to unlock bottlenecks and advance into new areas -- but some of the ways you do that were at least somewhat fresh.
Overall, I'm very excited. This promises to be as fun as the previous game. Yeah! 7:35:47 PM
